In addition, I”m very pleased to be working on an ongoing basis with Lineage Management, a company that handles social media, marketing and websites for top-tier athletes. I’m bound to secrecy beyond that vague statement, but suffice it to say I’m working on new websites for some very high-profile athletes! As a huge sports fan, this is very exciting for me.

Of all the CAPTCHA verification options out there, ReCAPTCHA is my favorite. Not only does it serve a noble cause (each correctly entered response helps improve the accuracy of book digitization projects). Not only is it available in a nice WordPress plugin (albeit one that can wreak havoc with certain jQuery-based functionality). But wait, there’s more. ReCAPTCHA is the only CAPTCHA system that actually uses real words, not crap like the impossible to read myspace CAPTCHAs:

So sometimes you get super-hilarious results by combining two random words together (see example above). I’ll post any amusing ones I come across here. If you find any of your own, let me know and I’ll add them.

Royale are an Ypsilanti (think Detroit), MI-based rock band. They’re friends with Michael J, fellow designer and guitarist for my band Bethpage Black. I always like making sites for friends (or friends of friends), so I was happy to work on their site. It features some nice sIFR for the text and a customized mp3 widget. Check out their music–it’s like if Jack White were the singer for Radiohead.

Earlier this month I did a site for AK Kurji, a film producer and director from Houston. His latest project is Tremens, a feature-length suspense/horror film. AK is involved with many different ventures, including music production, so he and I will be doing a lot of work together in the future.

Whenever I work with someone artistic, there are always little intricacies that seem trivial at first, but end up really making the difference in their site. For Michael J’s site, it was the use of scalable Inman Flash replacement (sIFR) for the article titles, widget titles and main menu items.

A quick primer on sIFR and web-safe fonts: As any typography enthusiast will tell you, there are only a few “web-safe” fonts, ones that will display correctly on most browsers and operating systems. These include golden oldies Arial, Georgia, Lucida Grande, Verdana and others. Normally, if you want text using non-standard fonts, you have to make images, either by hand (such as the Postmodern Sublime logo), or dynamically, perhaps through a PHP script.

In recent years, however, the emergence of sIFR has brought unique, accessible and dynamically-generated typography to the masses. Using Javascript, sIFR instantly creates small Flash objects, then applies them as overlays to specifically defined parts of text on a site. Michael J wanted non-standard fonts Lubalin and Trade Gothic for his main menu and article titles, so sIFR proved to be the winning technique.

Learning the ins and outs of sIFR proved to be pretty frustrating–the Lubalin font didn’t want to cooperate, there were problems with letter spacing, margins, etc–but the effect is really cool. It’s nice to see something other than the everyday fonts, and when your blog has to do with design, you need something to make it stand out from everyone else’s. (That’s why I used Century Gothic for PS). Check out his blog and marvel at the rich typography!

Postmodern Sublime are happy to have just launched the official site of Ordinary World, a new short film from PS client Blue Satellite Productions. Ordinary World stars Roger Bailey, is written by Ryan DePesa and is produced/directed by David Huzieran.

Synopsis: Michael McBride, a high school valedictorian turned medical school drop out, finds himself an undistinguished, forgotten guest at his 10 year high school reunion. Dejected and distressed, he has a chance encounter with a woman from his past, which harkens back to an extraordinary moment they once shared.
